Table tennis tourney

The Office of Intramural Sports will host a double elimination table tennis tournament for men’s and women’s singles, doubles and co-rec doubles.
All teams must be registered online through the IMLeagues registration on the Pitt State Website by Sunday, Oct. 5.
Games will be played Monday through Thursday at the Student Recreation Center starting Monday, Oct. 13.

Voter registration available in Oval

Members of the Student Government Association will be available in the Oval from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, through Friday, Oct. 3, to assist students, staff and faculty with first-time voter registration for both Crawford County and home counties.
A copy or photo of a birth certificate or passport must be provided.

Free jazz concert

A free Jazz concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Overman Student Center.
Local jazz bands and Pitt State’s Jazz Band will all perform.

Campus safety report available online

The Pittsburg State University annual security and fire safety report is now available on the Pitt State website.
The report is required by federal law and contains policy statements, crime statistics, university procedures, university safety programs and fire prevention and safety tips.
Statistics for the past three years are included for certain types of crimes reported on campus and/or in campus residential facilities.
Paper copies may be requested from the University Police and Parking Services, located in the lower level of Shirk Hall.

Review of drug, alcohol prevention programs available

Pittsburg State University’s most recent review of the university’s drug and alcohol prevention programs is now available online at the Pitt State website.
Paper copies may be requested by contacting the office of Campus Life and Auxiliary Services at 235-4321.

Author to speak

Chinelo Okparanta will read her works at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom of Overman Student Center. Her visit is part of the English Department’s Distinguished Visiting Writers Series.
Okparanta’s story, “America,” was short-listed for the Caine Prize in African Writing and her short-story collection, “Happiness, Like Water,” was nominated for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story award in 2013.
The reading is free and open to the public.

Midwest trumpet festival

The sixth annual Midwest Trumpet Festival will be Sunday, Oct. 12, and Monday, Oct. 13, on the PSU campus. This year’s featured artist is David Hickman, regents professor at Arizona State University and international soloist.
The Crowder Jazz Orchestra will also attend.
The festival is under the direction of Todd Hastings, professor of music. Performers, students, teachers and the Pittsburg community will have the chance to attend education sessions, individual and group classes, recitals and concerts throughout the two-day event.

Homecoming activities

Pitt State Homecoming week activities will begin Sunday, Oct. 5, to Saturday, Oct. 11.
The Spirit Art Fashion Show will start the week’s activities at 7 p.m. Sunday, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom. On Monday, homecoming Presentation Night will begin at 8 p.m. in McCray Hall where the top 12 king and queen candidates will be announced.
King and queen voting polls will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, through the GUS System and the annual Gorilla Games will begin at 7 p.m. at the PSU baseball fields.
Yell Like Hell starts at 7 p.m. Thursday at Carnie Smith Stadium.
The Taste of Pittsburg will be at 7 p.m. at the Kansas Technology Center; contact the Alumni Center for more information at 235-4758.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Homecoming Parade will begin at 9 a.m. in downtown Pittsburg, GorillaFest will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Gorilla Village and the football game will kick off at 2 p.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium.

Ebola takes countries off study-abroad list

At this time and moving forward there will be no approved study-abroad experiences in the countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone because of the Ebola outbreak in those countries. The International Programs and Services office is continuing to review the Ebola crisis and is following procedures for the possible impact of the virus on the Pitt State student population and future study-abroad opportunities outlined by the Centers for Disease Control.
